The dispute about freedom of speech in China is rekindled again because the Southern Weekend's New Year calling for reform was changed by propaganda officials. On the other hand, in Taiwan, a 100% democracy country, the crowd gathered in protest against media monopolization. We can have a better understanding why the dispute about freedom of speech happen in a centralized nation, however, this issue would be very confusing when it comes to a democracy nation.
Freedom is an opportunity to make decision, to choose life's path, and to have rights to know. So, media plays an key role of the process. It should be the echo of the past and present, be the reflection of public opinion. Of course, it's somehow inevitable that every media have their political position. However, people always have opportunities to choose what they want to know and believe. In this respect, China failed to provide transparent public opinions, not to mention provide the multiple information chooses for people.
As for the protest against media monopolization in Taiwan, actually freedom of speech and news are with utmost importance because of the constitution. Although maybe, just maybe, the media group will consist of television, magazine and newspapers, up to close 50% of Taiwan's media industry, people still have the freedom of choice from Internet, social media and everything. So, what matters most is how to filter your news materials and make your own value judge, which is part of democracy mechanism.
In fact, "media is the nervous system of a democracy." Not every media is subjective or objective, especially involving cross-strait political issue, so it would be kind of sensitive and controversial. Take away the political issue, then everyone in Taiwan could treasure and realize that they've owned the freedom of choice.
